THE City of Johannesburg is again offering financial help to students, in the form of 100 study bursaries for the 2008 academic year.
Worth R15 000 each, the bursaries - for current or prospective students - are only for one undergraduate academic year and cover tuition and registration fees, prescribed books and study material. Successful applicants are expected to study full time at any accredited South African tertiary institution in 2008.
Ten fields of study are considered: the built environment (architecture, construction management, quantity surveying, town and regional planning and other related fields); commerce; environmental health; all engineering fields; geo-informatics; information technology; logistics and supply chain management; nature conservation; political science; and property management.
The closing date for applications is 31 October. Short listed candidates will be contacted in January for a personal interview.
Residents of Joburg
Applicants must be South African citizens permanently residing in Johannesburg - proof of residence is required with the application.
Selection criteria are based strictly on academic merit and successful applicants are able to renew their bursaries annually based on their academic performance in the previous year. The bursary scheme was started in 2002.
The City's bursary office has advised that students are personally responsible for their admission to a tertiary institution.
Application forms are available from A-block reception at the Metro Centre in Braamfontein, at any of the City's People's Centres or online on the Joburg website.
Certified copies of the following documents must accompany applications:
- Most recent academic record;
- South African identity document; and
- Proof of residency in Johannesburg (water and lights, rates and taxes statement).
Completed applications can be posted to:
