PIKITUP scooped a silver award at the annual Roodepoort Chamber of Commerce and Industry's Business Awards, beating strong competition from more than 70 nominees in 16 categories.
About 300 guests filled the Montecasino Ballroom on Saturday, 3 November, where Pikitup received its silver award in the large business category. Mazista Tiles got the gold, with Manash South Africa taking bronze.
"When Pikitup was called to receive the award, it was just overwhelming. Yes we did it," said Pansy Jali, the public relations officer at the City's waste management company.
Being nominated was reason enough to celebrate; winning the award was just a "bonus". "We picked up a Rocci [Roodepoort Chamber of Commerce and Industry] award before, so this is not the first. Last year the company received a service excellent recognition award. Next year we will make sure we get the gold," she said.
This year there were 16 categories of awards. Lucrative Exchange was the gold award winner in the emerging business category, which was restricted to businesses that have been operating for 18 months; in the small businesses category Lizzie's Maids took gold; Painter CC was the winner in the medium business category; the restaurant winner was The Meat Company Clearwater; hotel and accommodation was taken by Glenburn Lodge; and in the tourism category first prize went to Amadwala Lodge.
Rocci has partnered with First National Bank in the awards, which have been handed out for 22 years. They aim to recognise those businesses whose hard work and innovations have created successful business ventures.
The competition is open to companies that have been in full operation for at least two years; businesses that have achieved success and truly embodied the spirit of enterprise; and anyone associated with a successful business, including employees, suppliers, buyers, bankers, business agencies, attorneys and accountants.
A panel from the South African Institute of Professional Accountants judged the nominees, looking at business principles, social responsibility, black economic empowerment, the future of the business in the industry, market place and leadership qualities.
Pikitup would strive to ensure that it continued living up to its vision "to be the pioneering and environmentally focused waste management company in Africa", Jali said.
