TONIGHT'S Night of the Stars has been cancelled. The charity gala event was to have been held at the Coca-Cola Dome in Northgate on Thursday, 8 November.
Seven times Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong, Latin crooner Julio Iglesias and up-and-coming musician Nicola Congui were to have been guests.
Iglesias postponed his visit to the country earlier in the week because of the wild fires that have torn through California. "We regret to inform you about his cancellation, the whole country and charity organisations were looking forward to this event," said Penny Stein, one of the organisers.
"Congui and Armstrong were also forced to postpone their visits."
Night of the Stars is an annual charity ball attended by well-known public figures.
Armstrong won the Tour de France seven consecutive times - from 1999 to 2005. The cyclist has several other accolades under his belt and was set to talk about his life and career.
Iglesias and Congui were due to add a musical element.
"All tickets issued so far for the event are refundable, with those tickets purchased on credit card being automatically refunded by their service providers," according to the 94.7 Highveld Stereo website. The radio station is one of the organisers.
All proceeds from the event were to benefit the Star Skills Development Organisation, the African Children's Feeding Scheme and the Topsy Aids Foundation. "We promise that next year we will hold two Night of the Stars events," Stein added.
