FROM opera and picnicking on the lawn, to lazing under the winter sun, mothers will be celebrated on 13 May across Joburg, when several organisations are planning to mark Mother's Day in grand style.

Talk Radio 702 is holding its annual 702 Mother's Day concert at the Johannesburg Zoo, presented by BP Express, as a family day. Picnics will be enjoyed on the lawn, while soloists and the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra will perform popular classics, under the baton of Richard Cock.

Radio 702 presenters will also be on hand to anchor the concert. "Building on the success of last year's concert, this year's event will have lots more to offer the visitor," says a spokesperson.

There is parking at the zoo space and at Zoo Lake for the event, which is expected to draw 12 000 to 14 000 people. The concert starts at 9am and ends at 3pm, with both kids and adults paying R20 entrance.

Across the city, PRO Musica Theatre has planned a delightful picnic concert at the theatre on Christiaan de Wet Road in Florida Park. The two-part concert will begin at 1pm, with opera conductor and Pro Musica founder Weiss Doubell conducting the Pro Musica Orchestra.

According to a theatre spokesperson, the starting time was planned so that concert-goers could have a picnic lunch during the beautiful Highveld autumn day before the chilly air sets in later in the afternoon.

The first part of the concert will run until 1.50pm, when it will break for lunch on the lawn. The second half of the concert will run from 3pm for an hour. The Orchestra will perform the music of Johann Strauss Senior, Josef Strauss, Offenbach and Suppè.

Now in its 26th year, the Mother's Day picnic has been an annual event at Pro Musica. Bookings for the concert can be made at Computicket outlets and tickets are available for R50, R80 and R120.

There is a 25 percent discount on the R80 and R120 tickets for Friends of the Theatre, pensioners, learners and students. Group bookings for 10 or more are also able to get a discount. Credit card bookings can be made by calling Queen at Computicket in the Pro Musica Theatre on 011 672 2217.

For further information contact Graham or Nico at Pro Musica Theatre on 011 674 1357/8.

Gallagher Estate, in Midrand, will host its annual Mother's Day buffet at the Wine Garden Restaurant. Lunch will be served from 11.30am; entrance is R150 a person, R75 for children under 12. Booking is essential, on 011 266 3095.

Musician Shaun Tait will put on the ritz for mothers at B&B Markets Hillfox, on Hendrik Potgieter Drive, in Weltevreden Park. His performance will start at 1pm on Sunday 13 May, and entrance is free.
