Constitution Hill teaches kids about human rights

To mark Human Rights Day, Constitution Hill has devised a programme focusing on the rights of children with disabilities. The police will be on hand to teach youngsters about their rights and safety.

CONSTITUTION HILL will celebrate Human Rights Day with a full programme aimed at schoolchildren.

Human Rights Day is on Wednesday, 21 March, and the day's activities will start at 9am and end at 4pm. Several venues at Constitution Hill will host events, including the Junior Education Court Yard, the Slovo Court Yard and the Old Fort Atrium.

It will start with a welcome by a Constitutional Court justice. Mmabatho Mokwena, the co-ordinator of the Junior Education Centre, says that this year's focus is on - but is not limited to - children with disabilities.

Through its work, Constitution Hill plans to improve children's knowledge about human rights. Learners from a number of schools will participate in the day's programmes. "We're having learners from schools across Joburg and they'll discuss human rights and learn more about the rights of disabled people."

The programmes have been divided into different age groups, targeting young children from three to 12 years old, and older children from 13 to 18 years old.

The South African Police Service will give a presentation on rights, crime prevention and safety tips for both junior and senior learners. Various activities like storytelling, drama, dance, arts and crafts, drumming, singing and poetry will form part of the junior programme.

Older learners will have report-back sessions and a discussion on the rights of children with disabilities. Lunch will be served between 1pm and 2pm.

It was on this day 47 years ago that the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania organised an anti-pass law demonstration. The pass laws were designed to restrict black people from entering areas designated by the government for white people only, except for work.

As demonstrators gathered outside the Sharpeville Police Station, police opened fire, killing 69 and seriously injuring 180 people.
