Environment summit honours community forums

Community-based environmental forums received awards and prize money from the City's Department of Environment as part of activities to mark the international environmental week.

THREE community-based environmental organisations received awards for their activities at the environmental summit held on 6 June at the Braamfontein Recreation Centre.

The summit was part of the activities organised by the City to observe World Environment Week.

The City's Department of Environment honoured custodians of the environment, awarding them prizes for their efforts in caring for nature and spreading environmental awareness.

Three of the participating community forums received prize money at the ceremony for their unsurpassed contribution, in not only changing attitudes, but also labouring towards the well being of the environment in their communities.

The coveted R15 000 first price went to the Soweto Mountain of Hope Forum, an acclaimed environmental and cultural group from Chiawelo in Soweto.

The second price of R10 000 went to the Alexandra Environment Forum.

Third prize went to the Diepsloot Bontle Ke Thlago Environmental Community Forum, who received R5 000 for their efforts in catering for the environment.

The awards were handed out by Councillor Prema Naidoo, the City's MMC for environment.

The prize-giving was a highlight of the summit hosted by the City's Department of Environment. The summit was designed to encourage Joburgers to be involved in caring for the environment.

During the summit, the City localised the week's international theme – Melting Ice: A Hot Topic – to Climate Change: A Call for Local Action, to make it resonate with Joburgers. The summit reflected on topics such as biodiversity conservation, energy efficiency, pollution, and waste management.

Outcomes of the summit will be used as inputs in the development of the City's Climate Change Response Strategy, planned for next year.

The summit overlapped International World Environment Day on Tuesday 5 June, which also kick-started an environmental youth summit on climate change, attended by over 50 different youth organisations from across the city.
