Conference looks
at 2010 benefits
for small businesses

A conference, with the national government and the Local Organising Committee, will look at ways in which small, medium and micro enterprises can benefit from the 2010 soccer spectacular.

THE 2010 Fifa World Cup™ will present a lot of business opportunities to small, medium and micro enterprises, particularly as the Local Organising Committee has set aside 30 percent of its procurement budget for goods and services from SMMEs.

With this in mind, the committee, together with the Department of Trade and Industry, is planning a two-day Business Opportunities Conference on 19 and 20 June.

"The conference will address the challenges to full participation faced by small enterprises and local businesses," said the committee's chief executive, Danny Jordaan. "In this regard [it] is expected to build a partnership in identifying interventions to ensure broader economic participation and growth for the small enterprise sector in the context of the 2010 Fifa World Cup™."

He explained that the government's investment in infrastructure and services was expected to create even more opportunities for small enterprises.

"While we have committed to the 30 percent procurement spend on SMMEs, we as an organisation will work to not only reach this target but, in fact, to exceed it."

He said there had been huge investments in infrastructure and "we have to make sure that SMMEs are going to benefit from this".

The conference will look at identifying economic opportunities that will benefit local businesses in various sectors. It will also come up with a holistic approach to economic development initiatives and clarify the roles of the public and private sectors in exploiting these opportunities.

Joburg's neighbour, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, is a partner in the conference, which will be held at Emperor's Palace in that metro. OR Tambo International Airport is in Ekurhuleni, making the metro the key entry and exit point to South Africa.
