METRO police plans to swell its ranks with 500 new officers every year over the next few years.
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) aims to increase its numbers to combat crime and enforce by-laws in the build up to the 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup.
This means that by 2010 there will be 4 000 JPMD officers. The department was established in 2001 with 425 officers.
"JMPD will recruit 500 new officers every year starting from this year. This is our plan in preparation for the 2010 World Cup," said metro police spokesperson Edna Mamonyane.
"These new officers will undergo the same basic training as all the officers we have but they will be deployed at Johannesburg's main routes and busy areas. When officers are recruited they undergo physical training whereby we establish if they are fit enough and healthy."
New officers were also trained in the latest technology and learned how to deal with criminals "tactically".
Speaking at the recent handover and sod turning ceremony at the Soccer City Stadium, Executive Mayor Amos Masondo said safety and security planning for 2010 was at an "advanced stage".
The City has set aside about R385-million for safety and security during the soccer spectacular. It will extend the close circuit television camera (CCTV) surveillance system throughout the city and link this with a national database containing biometric data.
Joburg's safety plans will be integrated into the national 2010 security strategy and its metro police will work closely with the South African Police Service and the national intelligence community.
"We want to host a people-friendly and incident-free world cup and ensure that visitors will enjoy the many sights of Johannesburg in a safe and secure environment," Masondo said.
Mamonyane reiterated his words, saying, "This will be done so that the huge numbers of visitors who will come to Johannesburg are safe and secure at all times."
To be recruited to the JMPD, a candidate must have passed matric, be a South African citizen and have a valid driving licence.
