Put your trainers on –
it's the Zoo Trot

Once again the Johannesburg Zoo is holding its regular Zoo Trots. For an early morning jog, you can't beat running – or walking – among the animals.

MOST people begin the new year with a resolution to get fit – and the Johannesburg Zoo is making sure it is easy and fun to keep that resolution with its regular Zoo Trots.

The first Zoo Trot of the year will be held on Sunday, 11 February, and it is open to all. A zoo trot is a fun run or walk around the zoo – on either a 10km or a 5km route. It takes place every second Sunday of the month throughout the year.

Zoo events co-ordinator, Sophia Mtshali, says that the Zoo Trot is a great opportunity for an ideal jog; families, friends and individuals can watch the animals waking while they run around the 54ha enclosure.

"The Zoo Trot begins early in the morning when the animals are still running around. People can enjoy the freshness of the morning plus the animal viewing while they run or walk - without the fear of criminals because the zoo is a big but very safe area."

The gates open at 7.30am and the entrance fee for the Zoo Trot is R20 – although participants can complete as many rounds of the routes as they wish.

On leaving, all the zoo trotters are given a medal depicting the zoo's animal of the month. Children may not bring their bicycles or skate boards.
