Sand animation
comes to Joburg

In Johannesburg to appear in a television advertisement, Israeli sand animation artist Ilana Yahav is performing a concert to raise funds for Masibambane College.

MASIBAMBANE College in Orange Farm is to benefit from the ethereal sand art of Israel's Ilana Yahav.

An internationally acclaimed sand animation artist, Yahav is in South Africa to perform her unique art, dubbed "Sand Fantasy", for a television advertisement. She was asked by The Agency, the local advertising agency, to appear in an advertisement for the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA).

While here, she will perform live, with the proceeds earmarked for Masibambane College. The performance will take place on Monday, 29 January. The idea came from Meirion Griffiths, The Agency's group creative director.

"I just asked her, 'How about a charity event when you are in Johannesburg?' And she agreed, just like that … [Yahav] is a wonderful and friendly person," Griffiths says.

She was picked to perform in the advertisement because her work symbolises building lives from the ground – earth or sand – upwards, Griffiths explains. This ties in with the DBSA's work.

During her Sand Fantasy, the artist takes the viewer on a visual journey, the vehicles are her hands, fine sand and a lightbox. Using a video recorder and a giant television, viewers are able to watch as her images are created out of sand on a glass table.

Yahav's images portray movement, natural features like oceans, and creatures. She draws in rhythm, with musical pieces accompanying her performances.

The performance is on Monday, 29 January at 7pm. It takes place at the Big School, St John's College, in Houghton. Tickets are R50 each and are available from St John's College through Carol Wiswall on 082 821 7721 or by email at wiswall@stjohns.wits.ac.za. St John's College, one of Johannesburg's leading private schools, has played a pivotal role in Masibambane's growth since its inception in 1996. Seed funding came from the City of Vienna, in Austria. The two schools' close relationship cannot go unnoticed - even though one is in Houghton and the other in Orange Farm; they share a school uniform and use the same teaching ideas.
