Autumn-winter fashion week warms up Joburg

South Africa's first ever autumn-winter fashion week is planned for Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton. Buy your tickets now for the inaugural Audi Joburg Fashion Week.

January 19, 2007

By Tammy O'Reilly

FASHIONABLE South Africa has generally been one step behind Europe, imitating its designs, because of the difference in seasons. But with the inaugural autumn-winter Audi Joburg Fashion Week, local designers will get the chance to set their own trends for the coming winter season.

From 14 to 17 February a state-of-the-art transparent marquee will be pitched on Nelson Mandela Square to create the ambience of international fashion events for the Audi Joburg Fashion Week, South Africa's first ever autumn-winter fashion show.

A glass catwalk will be assembled under the marquee and the latest audio visual equipment will ensure that each show reaches a live audience of about 3 000 people, in the marquee and in restaurants around the square.

Featured designers are among the country's best, including many who represent South Africa abroad, such as Gavin Rajah and design partners Christiaan Gabriel du Toit and Malcolm Klūk. Other leading designers who will put on shows during the week include Hip Hop, Carducci, Jenni Button and Hilton Weiner.

Leisureworx, the company behind Nokia Cape Town Fashion Week and MTN Durban Fashion Week, is organising the event.

"This is the most significant move in African fashion in the last decade and represents a major leap forward for our designers," says Paul Jackson, the managing director of Leisureworx.

"The launch of this event allows our designers to compete internationally now in both fashion seasons. Our goal is to make the world-class talent of South African designers more accessible to international audiences."

Shows take place from 5pm to 9.30pm on weekdays. On Saturday, the final day of the event, collections will be shown from 3pm to 9pm. For a full programme log on to the Audi Joburg Fashion Week website.

Tickets to the shows start at R50 each and are available at Computicket. Alternatively, fashionistas can enjoy the shows on the television screens that will be placed around Nelson Mandela Square.
