Load shedding hits Joburg

Metro police are out in full force to help ease traffic congestion caused by power cuts across the city as Eskom rolls out load shedding strategy.

WITH traffic lights out across many Johannesburg suburbs, the City's metro police are out in full force at major intersections.

According to Johannesburg Metro Police Department spokesperson Wayne Minnaar, traffic along high volume routes and at intersections has been affected.

"Officers have been sent to the main intersections" to help ease the congestion in as many areas as possible.

The traffic congestion follows widespread electricity disruptions around Johannesburg on 18 January.

The outages are the result of generation problems at the national power utility, Eskom, according to the communications manager at the Johannesburg Roads Agency, Raven Shabe,

Earlier news reports stated that Eskom would carry out load shedding across the country following problems at its Koeberg Power Station outside Cape Town.

While technicians are working to rectify the fault, the utility has resorted to cutting power to certain areas for set periods of time, reducing demand on the system.

Areas affected in Johannesburg include Sandton, Rosebank and a large part of the west rand.

Shabe said his department had not been given a schedule of which suburbs would be affected next, however, Eskom has published a schedule of its load shedding on its website www.eskom.co.za.
