Gautrain traffic
diversions in CBD

Smit and Wolmarans streets in Braamfontein are the latest streets to be affected by traffic diversions as construction of the Gautrain gathers pace.

February 20, 2007

By Lucille Davie

FOLLOWING the spectacular implosion of four buildings in Braamfontein two weeks ago, Gautrain officials have put road diversions in place in Smit Street to allow them to continue construction of the railway line.

On Saturday, 17 February, Smit Street in Braamfontein between Joubert and Hoek streets closed to traffic; it will be closed until October. Wolmarans Street has become a two-way street between these two blocks.

The four buildings that were imploded will become the construction site for the Park Station Bombela Gautrain station.

"Gautrain acknowledges the effect the diversion will have on the safety of motorists and pedestrians," Bombela says in a press statement. "To mitigate any negative impact, traffic authorities are ensuring that there is adequate road signage for both pedestrians and motorists."

Bombela has done the adjustment of the utilities in preparation for the diversion and the construction operations. Traffic has been diverted from Smit Street right into Joubert Street, along Wolmarans Street, then left into Hoek Street to join the east-flowing Smit Street.

Special access arrangements have been made for the Ned Equity/Spoornet building in Wolmarans Street, and the Wesbank building in Joubert Street, as well as residential buildings in the area.

In the second phase of construction, traffic will be diverted in the reverse direction. So traffic along Wolmarans Street will be diverted right into Hoek Street, left into Smit Street, then left into Joubert Street, and right again into Wolmarans Street. The date for this arrangement will be announced later.

A map showing the diversion is available on the Gautrain website.
