THE biting cold that greeted Joburgers this morning is normal; and the warmer weather the city had last week is "not normal for this time of the year".
This is the word of Tracy Gill, a climatologist at the South African Weather Service. Joburgers woke to a chilly morning as the temperatures dropped to single figures. Residents had to brave strong, cold winds blowing at 32 kilometres an hour, a cloudy sky and patches of fog, with a partly cloudy forecast for the rest of the day.
"We had a cold front last night and these are the kinds of weather conditions people can expect after a cold front."
Gill said that in the last 15 years the country had been experiencing warmer winters - the influence of global warming. "People don't have the sense of what winter should be like anymore because over the past couple of years we've been having winters that have more warmer days than before."
Temperatures are expected to be low for most of the week as the chill continues to strike. The mercury will drop again on Tuesday, 7 August, with a minimum temperature of 4°C and a 30 percent chance of showers.
"Temperatures will recover on Friday; [however] we are due to have another cold front during the week," Gill added.
