Roads closed
around Zoo Lake

The MTN Club 100 Criterium is taking place on Sunday, and roads will be closed around Zoo Lake for the cycle race.

ROADS will be closed around the Zoo Lake in Parkview on Sunday for the MTN Club 100 Criterium.

The MTN Club 100 Criterium is a 3,5km cycling race, formerly known as the Zoo Lake Classic; it takes place on Sunday, 19 August from 9am to 4pm. This year there are two main categories for mountain bikes and tandems.

The event is sponsored by MTN, the cellphone company. It is open to cycling teams, corporates, amateur and professional cyclists.

"Spectators will enjoy the racing as much as the cyclists – it's like comparing a five-day cricket match to a one-day match," said MTN's sponsorship senior manager, Anthony Garstang.

The race starts at Zoo Lake Sports Club on Westwold Drive, travels along Avonwold Avenue, turns right on to Jan Smuts Avenue and right again on to Lower Park Drive, finishing back at the sports club.

"These roads will be closed [from] 9am to 4pm on [Sunday, 19 August], allowing for cross-over points during the event at down times," reads a notice sent to Parkwood and Parkview residents.

And to add to the fun for spectators, Microsoft is setting up an X Box Expo. There will be a big screen to watch the race, promotions and give-aways. According to a press release, there will be a total of R110 000 in cash prizes, MTN cellphone hampers and lucky draw prizes to be won.

The race is also open to sprinters and climbers, with the elite men's race being decided in a 45-minute sprint over the 3,5km circuit. "All other categories will be decided over 30 minutes plus one lap."
