IN a bid to raise funds, the Zoo Lake Users Committee has two fundraising events line-up this month - first up is a golf day, followed by a chocolate and wine tasting.
The cash raised will be used to complete the information centre and to improve the sports club. The Zoo Lake Users Committee is a non-profit organisation that raises funds to help Johannesburg City Parks with upkeep at the landmark green space.
Hosted by the Wanderers Golf Club, the golf day takes place on Wednesday, 22 August. Those not actually taking part in the sport, are invited to watch over drinks at the bar.
"Earlier this month we appealed to golf players to join in; so far we have 20 players," said Graeme Wallace, the manager of the Zoo Lake Sports Club. "We are, however, still short of five players to make a full team of 25."
He said the cash made on the day would be put to good use at the sports club. "Proceeds of the golf day will be allocated towards fixing it up - making it an asset for Joburg."
Calling for sponsorship, he said the more sponsors there were, the better the prizes, which already included goodie bags, wine hampers, getaways and other great prizes. "We have at the moment four sponsors - FNB [First National Bank], Emperors Palace, Anchor East and Pro Shop. We still want more."
Corporates could give cash sponsorships or provide T-shirts for the players. Sponsoring companies would be able to use the sports club for private games and functions, Wallace added.
"Helping in this event will also be a way for companies to give back to the community."
Wine and chocolate
Adding on a bit of flavour to the month, a wine and chocolate tasting is planned for Sunday, 26 August. It is booked for the Arcadia Room at the luxury Westcliff Hotel.
Robyn Knocker of Chocolat de Belgique will introduce chocolate lovers to the mysteries of chocolate making - and speak about what wines to drink with different chocolates.
A wide range of wines from Saxenburg Wine Farm will be available for tasting. "Peter James Smith from SAFM and Helena Pires of Saxenburg wines will tell us about the wines and field any questions," said Lucy Taylor, the committee's events co-ordinator.
Nicole de Wet, the flautist and saxophonist, will perform at the tasting. "We promise everybody who comes to the event a pleasant and relaxed Sunday afternoon," Taylor said.
Tickets for the wine and chocolate tasting are R180 a person. It begins at 4pm and ends at 7pm. To book, contact Lucy Taylor on 011 726 2784. The golf tees off at 11.35am, with the last tee-off at 12.59pm. For more information on sponsoring or playing, contact Graeme Wallace on 082 492 3678.
