Mattafix to inspire Jozi

Prepare for a laidback evening of music inspired by Africa and the Caribbean from UK duo Mattaffix, whose universal reflections on big city life are sure to strike a chord with Joburgers.

UK DUO Mattafix are in town – headlining an Arts Alive International Festival event – and promising to "rock Joburg out" when they perform at the marquee in Newtown on Friday, 8 September.

Sporting fancy sunglasses and looking relaxed, Mattafix – Marlon Roudette and Preetesh Hirji – said fans can expect a show of their life.

"Fans can expect a live music extravaganza tomorrow and we promise they won't leave the place disappointed," said Roudette, during a chat with members of the media at The Bassline in Newtown.

Mattafix, which means "no problem", an expression from the island of St Vincent in the Caribbean, will be joined on stage by South Africa's own hip-hop group, Hip Hop Panstula (HHP), guitarist Farryl Purkiss and DJ Bob, for the 5FM and Arts Alive-sponsored show.

All proceeds from the concert will be donated to City of Johannesburg projects.

Describing their music, Roudette said their inspiration comes from Africa and the Caribbean where there is a "massive amount of African culture".

"We talk about relationships, personal experiences and things that we see everyday in our music. For example the hit song Big City Life reflects a feeling of loneliness one encounters in a metropolis like London."

The duo met when Roudette was visiting London from the Caribbean and they kept in touch until they recorded their first album, Signs of a Struggle, which has received world acclaim. They hope to release their second album soon.

"We have had some commercial success after the release of the album and our biggest challenge is to remain creative," said Hirji.

Welcoming the duo, Steven Sack, the City's director of arts, culture and heritage services quoted artist William Kentridge who said Johannesburg is the greatest city in the world after Paris.

"I hope after Mattafix's show, Joburg will be the greatest city in the world."

Entrance to the show is R100 and tickets are available at Computicket or at the door.
