Campaign urges
early school enrolment

An initiative of the Gauteng department of education, the Early Enrolment Campaign aims to encourage parents to register their children for school early - before the start of the next academic year.

AS the end of the year draws ever nearer, parents are being urged to enrol their children earlier in schools, before the start of the next academic year.

This follows the launch by the Gauteng department of education of its Early Enrolment Campaign, which aims to help parents who have problems with placing their children who are starting at primary or high school, or those who have relocated and need to enrol their children in new schools. The campaign aims to get pupils registered before 2 December, the end of the current school year.

Launched on 1 June and ending in October, the campaign is aimed at avoiding late registration, which results in learners missing valuable school days while parents seek out schools that can take them.

According to reports, the provincial government has ensured the message reaches parents through newspapers, radio stations and the distribution of admission booklets and leaflets.

"Since the strategy was introduced, the number of late registrations that take place in January each year has dropped considerably," says the department, adding that the campaign also informs parents about their rights and the procedures, processes and responsibilities involved in enrolling their children in school.

When enrolling their child, parents must receive a note of which waiting list they are on, as well as the waiting number. However, if their child is refused admission, they must receive a letter explaining the refusal.

"The school management tries to give feedback to parents as soon as possible, and that enables parents to make proper arrangements for the next school year," explains the department.

The closing date for admission to public schools for 2007 is Saturday, 30 September 2006.
