A NUMBER of works of art donated by young and established artists from around Joburg will be auctioned at a charity drive initiated by the culture committee of the Junior City Council.
The auction, which will include paintings, photographs and sculptures, is to take place on Tuesday, 19 September at the Everard Read Gallery in Rosebank.
Donated art includes works by Deborah Bell, David Goldblatt, Winston Saoli, Joachim Schönfeldt, Gail Behrmann, Sam Nhlengethwa, Kay Hassan, David Koloane, Kagiso Patrick Mautloa, Terry Kurgan, Nadine Hutton and Naama Nothman. All proceeds raised through the auction will go towards projects run by the Junior City Council and Women and Men Against Child Abuse.
Work by David Koloane will be on auction
The deputy chairperson of the culture committee, Palesa Titi, explains that a decision would still be taken on the distribution of the funds. "We feel that abuse is common in South Africa and through this initiative, we hope to raise awareness in our communities."
The Junior City Council is made of pupils from several Johannesburg high schools. It meets every fortnight in the main council chambers for formal debates. The council has its own junior mayor, deputy mayor, town clerk and executives.
Women and Men Against Child Abuse is a non-profit organisation that works to break the complex cycle of abuse through its preventative programmes. It needs child abuse facilities.
The artworks will be open for viewing from 3.30pm; the exhibition will be followed by the auction from 5.30pm to 6.30pm.
"We invite people to come … [and] support the auction," Titi says.
