SA Ballet Theatre
holds auditions

Young dancers are urged to audition for the South African Ballet Theatre's graduate programme this weekend.

A CALL has been made to all aspiring dancers by the South African Ballet Theatre (SABT), which is holding auditions for its 2007 graduate programme on Saturday, 21 October.

The ballet company aims to recruit the cream of the country's ballet dancers through the auditions, which will be held at the SABT studios in the Johannesburg Civic Theatre complex. The auditions will run from 10am to 12 noon, but applicants are advised to arrive by 9am to warm up before auditioning.

SABT's Samantha Saevitzon says dancers do not need to prepare dances but must wear tight clothing and proper shoes. "Ballet masters and mistresses are looking for the right body, talent and the best of the best because once they are selected, they will be performing with the company at a professional level."

Dancers chosen for the year-long programme have to attend SABT classes and rehearsals, and take part in its professional productions. At the end of the year the students have to write research reports based on the SABT seasons. The course includes general office management and public relations training.

The SABT's executive committee evaluates the students' progress and awards certificates to those who have completed the year successfully. Outstanding students can then be hired by the committee.

The graduate programme costs R8 000, which can be paid in R2 000 tranches. To be considered, dancers should be at least 16 years old and have to present one-page curriculum vitae at the audition. To register for the auditions, phone Edgar Moagi on 011 877-6893 or 011 877-6898.
