Construction disrupts
Main Reef Road traffic

A manhole sewer being constructed along Main Reef Road will disrupt traffic until early December, says Joburg Water.

October 5, 2006

By Thabang Mokoka

A NEW sewer manhole, costing just under R1-million, is being constructed on Main Reef Road in Denver, eastern Joburg. The new sewer will help to reduce overloading of the existing sewer on the eastern side of Main Reef Road.

Known as micro tunneling, the project is being spearheaded by Johannesburg Water, the City's water and sanitation utility. Micro tunneling is a trenchless technology operation. The new sewer will comprise of 900 metres of new pipe of 250 millimetres in diameter being installed at a depth of five to six metres.

Work began on Monday, 2 October. The executive manager for marketing and communications for Joburg Water, Zali Mbombo, says that the community "will benefit from the increased capacity of the new installation which will alleviate the risk of blockage and hence spillage".

The sewer is being installed on the pavement, except for a section where there are multiple existing cables, where the route will be deviated into the road, Mbombo says. It will run along the road for about 100 metres before returning to the pavement.

Construction of the sewer manhole will disrupt traffic on Main Reef Road, between Chilvers and Spain roads until 2 December, but there will be no deviation to alternate routes.

"A restricted throughway will remain for traffic; just shifting over to the eastern side will be necessary," Mbombo explains.

Residents and motorists can contact Johannesburg Water at its 24-hour helpline on 011 688 1500 if they have any queries.
