AS the scorching summer sun raises the temperature, people head for their swimming pools and other open water, such as rivers, lakes and dams, to cool down. And the City's emergency management services (EMS) prepares for any eventuality.
In an attempt to prevent accidents, it is educating the public about water-related safety precautions.

This week alone, three kids were reported to have drowned in Joburg.
EMS media liaison officer Michael Midgely says the unit has released a list of 20 safety tips and hints. These are:
Never swim alone or allow anyone to swim unsupervised;
Learn to swim as soon as possible – children as young as four can learn to swim;
However, don't think that a child is drown-proof after a few lessons – accidents still happen;
Always swim in designated areas in lakes and dams and at the sea;
Wear a life jacket or life preserver if you cannot swim – an air mattress or tube does not replace a life jacket;
Don't swim in cold water as it may cause hypothermia;
Never dive into unknown or cloudy water;
Never swim if you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol;
Obey all swimming signs and lifeguard instructions;
Never swim or play in stormwater systems;
Never attempt to cross flooded rivers or roadways;
Never assume that someone is watching the children – assign a responsible adult to watch the pool and the area surrounding the pool;
Lock all doors and gates leading to the pool area;
Have the pool fenced and gated with self-latching devices;
A properly fitted pool net may be a better solution;
Don't leave toys or other objects near or in the water;
If the pool is not in use because of filter or pump problems or is no longer required have it drained – dirty water is not a deterrent and you cannot see a child in the water;
Learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and keep the EMS numbers close by – Joburg's emergency number is 011 375 5911 and the national toll-free number is 10177;
Do not allow children to run or ride around the swimming pool; and
Do not dive in the shallow end of the pool
