A NEW advisory board will be set up soon to support the City's attempts to tackle the multitude of environmental issues facing it.
As the population and number of industries in Joburg grow, issues such as climate change, waste management, air quality, energy and open spaces are growing in importance. The Environmental Advisory Forum will be set up in the next six month to advise the environmental management unit on such problems.
The City has plans to identify environmental management projects
It will comprise of environmental experts, interest groups and communities, and will be responsible for raising awareness about environmental problems through debates and discussions. The forum's experts will also give valuable input on how to implement effective environmental management solutions.
"The establishment of the forum is a result of various community inputs and the recognition that the City's stakeholders can play a vital role in the improvement and management of the environment," said Prema Naidoo, the member of the mayoral committee for environmental management.
The forum will also help Johannesburg to identify environmental management projects that will lead to poverty alleviation, job creation and economic empowerment.
Community-based organisations, non-governmental organisations and other bodies interested in the environment are asked to submit the name of their organisation, contact details and background information to Lorraine, via email at lorrainemakeketlane@joburg.org.za or on 011 407 6505.
