October 3, 2006
THE City of Joburg is once again embarking on Public Transport Month activities during October 2006, in association with the Gauteng Department of Public Transport, Roads and Works and the Department of Transport as part of this national initiative.
As part of its activities to contribute to Public Transport Month, the City will be promoting the use of public transport by City employees, as well as ridesharing during the month of October.
Over and above this, the activities will also be centred around four themes identified by the national Department of Transport, namely, Safety and Security; Infrastructure and 2010 Plans; Public Transport; and Non-Motorised Transport. Attached is the calendar of other activities that have been planned for the City.
What is ridesharing?
Ridesharing is a flexible and convenient way to get you where you need to go. You can share a ride as often as you want. All you need is one, two or three other people to make it work. Ridesharing only applies to owners of private cars. Rideshare with friends, co-workers, other parents taking the kids to school, an acquaintance from the gym, or you can contact the City of Johannesburg's RideSmart helpdesk to find potential Rideshare partners- these may be new people you can get to know.
How do I find people to rideshare with?
By logging on to the
RideSmart link on www.joburg.org.za, (find RideSmart link by scrolling down on the right hand side of home page), you will be able to submit your name, travel details and typical work schedules, into a secure database. The helpdesk will match other potential candidates who live and work near you and who have similar work schedules and advise you when a suitable partner has been found. Once you register, only you can access your own account at any time to make changes to your commuting information. All registration information is kept confidential.
Incentives on the cards
For those living as far away as Tshwane travelling to Johannesburg or vice versa and who travel with two or three other participants in one car, can take advantage of the national Department of Transport initiative which is considering dedicating the fast right hand lane of the Ben Schoeman between Brakfontein interchange and St Andrews offramp as an "HOV3+" lane.
This means that public transport vehicles (buses & taxis), as well as any other vehicles, except trucks, with 3 or more persons will be permitted to use this lane. The road traffic signage which dedicates such a lane will be displayed with a yellow diamond with the number 3 in the centre. During this period this lane will be enforced and those cars with less than 3 occupants will be requested to move out of this lane.
This will be effective from Monday the 23rd of October to the 31st of October 2006 in the morning from 06h00-09h00, southwards from Pretoria to Johannesburg, as well as in the afternoon from 15h30-18h00, northwards from Johannesburg to Pretoria.
