wins top TV award

Television drama Hard Copy, set against the backdrop of the Joburg's bustling CBD, walked off with several major prizes in the inaugural South African Film and Television Awards.

THE first South African Film and Television Academy Awards took place recently to acknowledge the work of those in the local film and television industry.

The awards ceremony, hosted by the City of Johannesburg, the National Film and Video Foundation and national broadcaster SABC is aimed at celebrating the talent and creativity in the South African film and television industry and encouraging the development of quality and excellence in South African film and television products.

It took place at Gallagher Estate in Midrand in two instalments on 27 and 28 October.

More than 500 entries of short films, feature films, documentaries, television dramas, sitcoms and soapies, magazines, wildlife children, variety and reality programmes were received.

On the first evening the craft, documentary, short film and student awards were presented to the winners in the respective categories.

For the main event on Saturday 28 October, 39 winners were conferred with a Golden Horn Award – the trophy shaped in a horn to symbolise the strength and the collective effort of the South African film and television industry.

Some of the categories were for the best Drama, TV Soap, TV Non-Fiction, comedy, feature film and documentary. The awards ceremony kicked off with the CEO of NFVF Eddie Mbalo presenting the award for Outstanding Contributor to South Africa's highly respected producer film producer Anant Singh.

Hard Copy, set in a bustling newsroom in the centre of Joburg, scooped Best Drama, as well as an award for Best Script and for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor in a TV drama.

Isidingo, the weekday soapie screened on SABC3 was one of the big winners for the night as it picked up awards for best soap, best make up, best script writing team as well as for the coveted Best Female and Best Male in a soapie.

The Best Comedy Award went to SABC1's City Ses'La.
