Homeless learner
wins study bursary

A homeless boy has won a bursary to study information technology in Cape Town. Walter Khumalo will leave the shelter in Berea and head south in the new year.

WALTER Khumalo will soon swap the city of gold for the Mother City. The homeless learner, in Grade 12 at New Nation High School, won a three-year bursary to study information technology and development at Northlink College in Cape Town.

Walter, who lives at the Jabulani Khakibos Kids Shelter in Berea, won the bursary after the Opel Rocking Future Roadshow visited the shelter earlier this year as part of its social responsibility initiative.

The roadshow visits schools to present career choices and fields of study to learners. It works in partnership with tertiary education institutions across the country. This year nine tertiary institutions participated, giving out bursaries.

Walter has overcome the challenges he has faced in pursuing an education, which has meant a three-hour train commute starting at 4am each morning. He has no money or family support.

Speaking about his chosen field of study, Walter said, "I love the complexity of working with computers and electronics."

He will travel to the Mother City early in 2007 to settle into his new home, before the academic year begins. The organiser of the Opel Rocking Future Roadshow, Tanya van den Berg, recognised that the bursary was not enough to set Walter on the right track for a bright future.

"We felt that providing accommodation would ensure Walter's success at the college and it seemed the obvious thing to do."

She said it would have been irresponsible to award him the bursary without giving him with the necessary tools and support he needed.
