CITY Parks thanked those who had contributed to greening the city at the annual Chairperson's Recognition Awards.
This year the awards, held on Friday, 20 October at the Wanderers Club, were made to internal and external role players who have positively influenced the state of the environment in Johannesburg, including the media, the corporate sector, community-based organisations, greening institutions and City Parks employees.
Recognised for supporting the chairperson; Howard Nel, Mavis Mabena, Martie van Duuren and Anne Lamberti and Luther Williamson, being congratulated by MMC Prema Naidoo and board chairperson Pumla Radebe
Pumla Radebe, the chairperson of the board of directors, said there were so many City Parks achievements that could be seen with the naked eye, and the hands that worked the parks, cemeteries, conservation areas and street trees needed to be recognised.
"It is very important that we recognise and acknowledge all those people who have made a difference."
In the past four years City Parks had changed the face of greening, with its marketing and media department securing between 10 and 15 mentions a week in the media, according to Dave Kirby, a board member.
Jenny Moodley, the marketing and media manager, received an award for excellent performance. This would not have been possible without the support of the media, which reported when the utility stumbled and gave credit when it was due, Radebe said.
Some of the external award winners were Pheladi Gwangwa on behalf of 702 Talk Radio, Erald Felix on behalf of the SABC television programme 50/50, and Winnie Graham on behalf of Anna Cox for The Star.
Radebe also made extraordinary awards to managing director, Luther Williamson; company secretary, Howard Nel; office manager in the managing director's office, Martie van Duuren; marketing assistant, Mavis Mabena; and personal assistant to the managing director, Anne Lamberti for the support they had given.
It was the last time Radebe would be handing out the awards as chairperson of the board. Speaking about her, Williams said he was honoured to have worked under such an incredible woman.
"We are thankful for the contribution you have made to our environment," he said, adding that in the past four years Radebe had played a vital role in greening Soweto and Joburg as a whole.
