THE Pick 'n Pay 94.7 Cycle Challenge, one of the premier cycling events in South Africa, has always attracted the big guns of the South African cycling scene. Joburg's Cycle
Challenge turns 10

This year is the tenth year that Joburg's safest race has taken place. And the organisers are pulling out all the stops to make it the biggest, best and safest yet.

JOBURG'S safest race, the Pick 'n Pay 94.7 Cycle Challenge, is 10 years old this year.

The race, on Sunday, 19 November, will start in Woodmead on Woodmead Drive, between Maxwell Drive and Van Reenen Avenue, and finish at the Waterfall Equestrian Estate, on the corner of Maxwell Drive and the R55 in Sunninghill.

Entries have already closed, with about 28 000 cyclists entered.

"It's truly amazing how the event has grown over the past 10 years," said 94.7 Highveld Stereo marketing manager, Dex de Bruin. The inaugural race drew about 4 000 cyclists.

De Bruin said that all cycling enthusiasts – old and young, professional and amateur – had been urged to participate in the event, given the special milestone it was celebrating. "Whether people have participated previously, or never ridden the race before, it doesn't matter, we want them there to celebrate this special day with us."

The Cycle Challenge route remains the same as last year. It goes through Parktown, over the Nelson Mandela Bridge in Braamfontein, up Jan Smuts Avenue and through Diepsloot to finish at the Waterfall Equestrian Estate.

The Children's Cycle Challenge and Mountain Bike Challenge will take place on Saturday, 18 November, starting and finishing at the Waterfall Equestrian Estate. The Cycle Challenge expo and race registration will take place from Thursday, 16 November to Saturday, 18 November at the Sandton Convention Centre in Sandton.

Once again the organisers are pulling out all the stops to put safety first. The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department, the Johannesburg Roads Agency and the Gauteng department of public transport, roads and works will work together to ensure that there is full road closure, making the Cycle Challenge Joburg's safest race.
