Metro police aims
to double its ranks

The metro police department is on a recruitment drive as it seeks to double its ranks in time for the 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup.

JOBURG metro police wants you. The metropolitan police force is recruiting more cops to strengthen its ranks as it needs 4 000 members by 2010.

"The department recruits between 120 and 300 trainees every year," says spokesperson Wayne Minaar.

At present there are 2 300 operational officers deployed throughout the city, but the department feels this needs to double because of the demands the 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup is expected to place on the City's safety and security unit.

Anyone without a criminal record and with a matric and a valid driving licence is encouraged to apply for the job. After the first selection phase, candidates will undergo criminal verification, physical fitness and mental proficiency testing before they enter the force.

Basic training will take place at the Metro Police Academy in Booysens, southern Joburg, where trainee officers will spend the first six months. A trainee salary of R2 000 a month will be paid during this time. After completing basic training, trainee officers will be deployed to various police stations for field training. During this period, salaries rise to R4 661 a month.

Application forms are available from the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department at Wemmer Complex, Eloff Street Extension, Village Deep, on the southern edge of the CBD. The forms must be returned to the same address before 25 October.
