A HANDFUL of cinematic masterpieces from the 1950s and 1960s, mostly inspired by the aftermath of the Second World War, will be screened at the first instalment of the Classic Film Festival.
The Goethe Institute, the German cultural organisation based in Parkwood, is hosting the festival, which runs from 10 October to 15 October.

Dubbed "99 films to see before you die", the festival aims, over the next few years, to show many films that are requested or suggested as worth seeing from different regions, genres and directors for future festivals.
In total 11 films will be screened, none of which is available commercially, making them especially appealing. They are sourced from a variety of European countries, including Italy, France, Czechoslovakia and Germany.
Before each film is screened there will be a short introduction by experts in the field of history, culture and the arts so that viewers can get a sense of the political and social context in which each film was made.
Just two of the films to look out for are the first Oscar winner for Best Foreign Film, La Strada, and the 1955 classic Sky without Stars, which is about a mother's quest to be reunited with her child after they are separated during the war.
All screenings are free and the foreign language films have English subtitles. The institute screens German films every Wednesday and throughout the year holds art exhibitions and cultural workshops.
