WHISKY lovers and wannabe whisky enthusiasts will have an opportunity to learn a thing or two about their favourite dram at the FNB Whisky Live Festival.
The festival runs from Wednesday, 8 November to Friday, 10 November at the Sandton Convention Centre in Sandton.
Over 180 different whisky brands will be showcased. Those attending will have an opportunity to understand the difference between a Scotch, Irish, Rye and Bourbon whisky, getting to know the distilling process and understanding why the word is sometimes spelt with an 'e'.
The 2006 FNB Whisky Live Festival takes place at the Sandton Convention Centre
"The FNB Whisky Live Festival is becoming a firm favourite on South Africa's cultural calendar, providing a non-threatening, experiential tasting environment in which to sample different whiskies from all over the world and to learn about whisky in general or something new about your favourite brand," said Sian Neubert, co-founder of NC Connect who are organising the festival.
"With the industry sending their distillers, master blenders and global brand ambassadors to present the ever popular Whisky Tasting Workshops, as well as to give the consumers an opportunity to meet the faces behind the brands, the festival promises to be as educational as it is entertaining and exciting," said Neubert.
Whisky lovers will have a choice of 15 one-hour workshops to attend.
"These in depth, tutored, informal, fun lectures are designed to improve whisky appreciation while de-mystifying the subject," said Karen Chaloner, of NC Connect.
The festival will incorporate four knowledge zones into the tasting hall. These areas will highlight Scotland, Ireland, America and other whisky regions such as Japan, Canada, South Africa, India and Wales.
Consumers will then be invited to answer questions on each region and can stand a chance to win a trip for two to one of the distillery regions sponsored by Virgin Airways.
The festival encourages people to enjoy themselves in a responsible manner. A voucher system for whisky sampling will be implemented to ensure that guests do not overindulge.
No tasting glass or vouchers will be given. Chauffeur services are also available on request.
A unique corporate hospitality package will be on offer in the new Virgin Airways Lounge in the main tasting hall. The lounge will be reserved for only 100 people per night at R550 per person (minimum of 10 people per group).
Tickets for the festival are selling at R120 per person and R100 a ticket for a group of ten or more people. Workshop tickets are selling at R75 or R185 for both the workshop and for the festival.
Ticket bookings can be made online by logging onto whiskylivefestival.co.za or by dialling the ticket hotline on 0861 114 460 or at the door.
