Conference looks at
365 days of activism

Salga conference aims to develop a year-long programme to combat gender violence and the abuse of women and children.

TAKING the 16 Days of Activism campaign up a level, the South African Local Government Association (Salga) aims to develop a 365-day programme for Gauteng to tackle gender and child abuse.

As part of 16 Days of Activism, it is holding a conference to design year-long action plans for local municipalities in the province.

The summit, taking place in Johannesburg on Thursday, 30 November, will also look at ways various role-players can co-ordinate their efforts.

The annual 16 Days of Activism campaign started on Saturday, 25 November, the International Day of No Violence against Women and Children, and runs until 10 December. It is held to raise awareness of gender violence and child abuse, as well as to fight against all forms of violence.

According to a Salga press release, the conference will give government officials a guideline of what is expected from municipalities and will set up a 365-day programme aimed at ending violence within local structures.

"This [conference] is a ground-breaking first effort in localising … 365 days of action against gender-based violence."

The deputy minister of provincial and local government, Nomatyala Hangana, and other senior local government officials are expected to attend.

Representatives from the City of Johannesburg will include the executive director of the Community Development Department, Philisiwe Twala-Tau, and Peta Qubeka-Mashinini, the director for human development in the department.

Joburg organisations will send 35 women and men, including gender activists and traditional leaders.

Salga's Gauteng head, Ekurhuleni executive mayor Duma Nkosi, will chair the conference. It will be held at Gallagher Estate in Midrand on Thursday, and starts at 8am.
