Buy a Tree of Light globe
for a loved one

SEND a message of goodwill or simply remember a loved one who has died with the annual Tree of Light at the Johannesburg Zoo.

November 24, 2006

By Tabisa Mntengwana

EACH Christmas the Tree of Light puts the spotlight on the goodwill of Joburgers. And once again, the city's people are urged to buy Tree of Light globes from Hospice Witwatersrand.

Each globe bought carries a message or dedication to a loved one. The Tree of Light initiative started 12 years ago as a fundraising project and has been adopted nationally. It is a platform to send messages of goodwill, love, peace, hope and greetings to family and friends over the festive season.

There are 10 000 globes on sale and they are available for R50 each for individuals and R250 each for corporates.

"The event is in support of those who have lost their loved ones and those who are terminally ill and in the care of Hospice," reads a press release from the Johannesburg Zoo, where the Tree of Light is located.

Maria Ramos, the chief executive of Transnet, switched on the lights on Sunday, 26 November at 7pm. During the ceremony a number of choirs sang. The lights will be on at the zoo until 24 December, Christmas eve.

The Tree of Light is organised by Hospice Witwatersrand in partnership with The Star newspaper and Johannesburg Zoo. Beneficiaries are Hospice and The Star Seaside Fund.

"The proceeds from the globes will be used to help fund different projects at Hospice, such as educating children and improving living conditions," said Hospice's Desre Murray.

To support this worthy cause, contact Hospice on 0861 hospice or visit the Tree of Light website. Entrance to the zoo on the opening night is free from 5pm to 9pm; normal zoo entry fees - R32 for adults and R19 for children - will be charged after 9pm.
