Super Animals move
into their new homes

Well on its way to achieving its vision of a world in one place, the Johannesburg Zoo has opened bigger, upgraded enclosures for its Super Animals.

THE zoo's Super Animals have a new home. The upgraded enclosures for the Super Animals of the Johannesburg Zoo were officially opened on Wednesday, 15 November.

They include Dare Bear, Tiger Tycoon and Reptile Mania. Hundreds of visitors, most of them children wearing black T-shirts with Super Animals prints, were taken on a tour of the zoo by officials. The big drawcard, of course, was the new, bigger, upgraded enclosures.

Part of the zoo's five-year redevelopment plan, the concept is to recreate the diverse eco-zones of the planet, so creating a unique experience for visitors. The zoo is planning to create seven distinct zones - the Spice Route, Heart of Africa, Southern Safari, Extreme Environments, Amazonia, Farmyard and an entertainment area - bringing different parts of the world to Joburg.

"It may take us more that five years to redevelop the zoo but we can assure you that were are well on track," said Johannesburg Zoo's chief executive officer, Jenny Gray.

"Working at the zoo has been challenging, educational and above all fun to see how we can improve the zoo and make it a better and healthier habitat for our animals … Once our animals are happy we are happy and so are our clients," she added.

The Temple of Snakes will be opened next year.

"We want to see families coming to the zoo and enjoying these new facilities. We want to make the zoo a fun place for families to visit," said Gray. "This is not the end of it today. The fantastic support from the City is allowing the zoo to grow and to improve into a world-class facility."
