City gives boost
to young talent

The CIT:Y Joburg Students Annual festival, a potpourri of student exhibitions, drama, music and dance, is now on around the city.

November 10, 2006

By Ndaba Dlamini

JOHANNESBURG is establishing itself as the creative arts capital of South Africa with yet another arts event, the Creative Industries Talent: Youth (CIT:Y) Joburg Students Annual festival, being added to the arts calendar.

The festival, a potpourri of student exhibitions, drama, music and dance, is a City initiative, supported by the MTN Foundation, and follows hot on the heels of the Joburg Arts Alive International Festival.

It will run from Friday, 10 November to Wednesday, 29 November at various venues in Johannesburg.

City director of arts, culture and heritage, Steven Sack, says the idea behind the CIT:Y Joburg Student Annual is to provide an annual showcase of new and emerging talent, and to give greater visibility to the work of various schools that exist in the city.

"In so doing, we celebrate the many public and private schools that provide training across a wide range of creative sectors such as art, advertising, applied art, craft, dance, design, film, music, fashion design and performing arts," he says.

Mayoral committee member for community development, Nandi Mayathula-Khoza, says the initiative will showcase Joburg as "not only a truly world class African city in the making, but an excellent centre of the creative arts".

The festival will provide some of the education participants and providers in the creative industries who are either registered educational institutions or who conduct Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA) -accredited training a chance to market themselves.

Some of the participating institutions are the Wits School of Arts (WSOA) in Braamfontein, Greenside Design Centre in Greenside, the University of Johannesburg, the Artists Proof Studio, the Design School of Southern Africa, Inscape Design College, the Campus of Performing Arts and a drama ensemble, Sibikwa Community Theatre.

The Festival will kick-off with You Strike a Woman, You Strike a Rock a drama by Sibikwa Community Theatre at the Market Theatre on Friday, 10 November. The production will run until 3 December.

A three-day student exhibition will run at the Greenside Design Center from Tuesday, 14 November to Thursday, 16 November. All students at the college will be exhibiting design art projects that they came up with over the course of the year. The exhibition will open at 6.30pm on Tuesday and at 9am on Wednesday and Thursday. Admission is free.

At the University of Johannesburg, fourth year B-Tech students will be exhibiting their work in visual art, fashion design, graphic design, jewellery design and industrial design from Wednesday, 15 November to Thursday, 30 November at the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture (FADA).

The exhibitions galore will continue when the Artist Proof Studio at the Bus Factory, Newtown holds a four-day art sale and third-year student exhibition. The art sale and exhibition will open on 22 November to 25 November starting at 4pm. Admission is free.

Everyone is invited at The Design School of Southern Africa in Birnam open day on 25 November where the school will showcase various courses on offer like media design and technology, photography, film-making, interior design and contemporary music, among others.

The creative arts festival will wrap up with an award ceremony on 29 November at a venue to be announced.
