NKELE Ntingane was thanked for her friendship over the past five years by the Johannesburg Civic Theatre, which handed her a cheque of R135 000 for the Joburg Mayoral Aids Fund.

A small reception was held in the Civic's cosy Shakespeare Room on Friday, 5 May to thank Ntingane, now the City's speaker, for her support and encouragement while she was the member of the mayoral committee for municipal enterprises. In this position, she represented the theatre.

Following the municipal elections in March, Ntingane was elected speaker of the City council.

"We felt we needed to recognise your efforts," said Bernard Jay, the theatre's chief executive.

During her term, Ntingane worked with the theatre's executives to make the Civic the country's theatre of choice. Today it is leased to third parties to provide top-class entertainment, including local and foreign productions.

"We loved your coming here and taking an interest in this company," Jay said, urging Ntingane not to be a stranger to the theatre.

While mayoral committee member for municipal enterprises, Ntingane introduced the theatre to the Joburg Mayoral Aids Fund. Speaking of the fund, Cas Coovadia, the chairman of the theatre's board, said, "This is our life and we are adding this into our family.

"We are committed to raising money for the Joburg Mayoral Aids Fund," he said, handing Ntingane a cheque for the fund amounting to R135 000.

"I am really humbled to receive these gifts," Ntingane responded. "It has always been a pleasure to be part of the theatre family and I will always be part of this family."
