SOUTH AFRICAN songstress Simphiwe Dana is set to dazzle at the Bassline in Newtown on Thursday evening.

Dana, along with Ghanaian composer and producer Rex Omar and Nigerian singer and guitarist Āsā, is on the bill of the Celebrate Africa Live Concert, presented by the French Institute of South Africa.

The 4 May concert starts at 8.30pm and is a taste of things to come at the Celebrate Africa festival. The festival is on later in May as part of the continent's Africa Day events.

Africa Day is an annual celebration held to promote Africa and acknowledge its diverse cultures, languages, beauty, arts and music. This year it is being held on Saturday, 27 May.

Known as "South Africa's newest lady of song", Dana has a rich, captivating voice that is filled with tenderness and nostalgia, while Āsā is a guitarist and singer who blends jazz and soul with a distinctly African beat. Āsā has performed with names such as Femi Kuti, Ludacris, Akon, and Les Nubians.

Composer, arranger and producer Omar will be performing with his eight-piece band nu-Ashanty.

Tickets are R60 and are available at the door or from Computicket on 011 340 800 or through the Computicket website.

For more information contact the French Institute of South Africa on 011 836 0561.
