JOBURGERS can forget the season's chills at the Spectacular Circus on Ice, which will warm up mid-winter at Gold Reef City Theme Park.

The show, which has a host of spectacular stunts and tricks in store, runs from 24 June to 16 July. Acts include acrobats, contortionists, can-can dancers, aerial acts, hoola-hoop performances, showgirls, figure skating, stunts and other death-defying features.

According to a Gold Reef City press release, this is the first time the breathtaking ice circus will be performed in South Africa. It mixes the traditional circus arts with figure skating to create some interesting, unusual entertainment.

Performers included 15 international champion ice-skaters, said Yolandi Smit, the public relations officer at the theme park. The lead performers were Elena Belyaeva, Maria Krasitseva, Artem Znachkov, and Leroun Sattarov.

For the ice spectacular, all stunts and tricks will be performed on real ice, Smit said.

Russian producer Edouard Miasnikov is responsible for bringing the ice circus to Joburg. He has brought to South Africa groups like the Russian State Kuban Cossack Dance Company and the famous Bolshoi Ballet.

The show is at Gold Reef City Theme Park Hippodrome from Saturday, 24 June to Sunday, 16 July. There are two shows daily – at 12 noon and at 3pm. Tickets range from R130 to R180 and are available from Computicket on 011 340 800 or through the Computicket website.
