IT'S time for that old 1970s hit to be dusted off and given another airing - Fangs is back, but this time with an all-new production.
A local comedy-rock musical, Fangs is about a Joburg vampire who loses his teeth. It first saw the light of day in 1977, as a workshop production of the then Performing Arts Council of the Transvaal, spearheaded by artistic director Ken Leach. The production was revived in 1981 and 1982, with new casts on each occasion.
The cast of Fangs: Bill Flynn, Jo Galloway, Tobie Cronje, Catherine Daymond and Michael Richards
The Joburg performances are on at the Montecasino Theatre, Fourways, from 10 August.
According to a press release, over the years there have been repeated requests from the public to revive the show, hence the re-vamp.
It has an upgraded storyline and new music, although Bill Flynn and Michael Richard are back. The two are the only actors to have been involved in every incarnation of Fangs. Tobie Cronje, another of the original actors, is also back.
Back in 1977 Tim Plewman was the young man who manned the coffee kiosk and sold sweets and programmes in the foyer. Today, with an impressive theatrical track record behind him, including the long-running Defending the Caveman, he is producing and directing the show.
He also rewrote it, along with Flynn. Composer Bobby Louw has a brand new score with a cross-section of musical styles from the 1940s to today. Janine Neethling is the musical director.
The 15-strong cast includes Jo Galloway, Catherine Daymond, Vanessa Harris and David James. There are also 12 new dancers - six male and six female.
Adding to the allure, there will be a weekly costume night, which people will be encouraged to attend dressed in the most outlandish vampire outfits they can find. A CD of the show will also be available.
Fangs is on at the Montecasino Theatre in Fourways from 10 August. Bookings can be made through Computicket on 011 340 8000 or 083 915 8000 or through the Computicket website.
