Diepsloot to
get a clean sweep

Residents and City employees will join forces to clean up Diepsloot as part of the Letsema Programme, and residents will be urged to keep it spruce after the ''derby day''.

DIEPSLOOT residents will be urged to pitch in and help a mass clean-up campaign of the township as part of the Letsema Programme.

The campaign, on Friday, 9 June, will involve the City's housing department, communications department, Johannesburg Water and City Parks. The aim is to promote a safe and a healthy environment.

It will also help to assess the level of service delivery in the area and to educate residents about the role they can play in keeping the region clean, says Albert Langeveldt, the assistant director for project implementation in Area A housing. Area A encompasses Regions 1 and 2.

"We want to continue helping to maintain this area by involving both the people and the government."

The basis of Letsema is an old communal tradition whereby members of the community help each other with tasks that were too difficult for one family, at no cost to the family being helped.

"It will be a derby day of clean up," Langeveldt says, adding that the agencies will do what they are good at on the day.

"The intention of the initiative is to work with building teams to boost their morale - and that of the community in the process … The campaign will take a little bit of work but it will be an exciting day for all involved."
