MUSICIANS celebrating Africa Day in Alexandra gave it their all, ensuring that the performances kept the small audience on their feet, jiving to the beat.

Held at the Altrec Stadium, the show began early in the morning on 27 May – an impressive array of "up-and-coming" musicians lined up for the day.

"We have 15 musicians from around Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni performing today, all of them performers who are trying to find a footing in the music industry," said Zanele Mazibuko from music promoters Blackagemedia.

The show was put on to celebrate Africa Day, the day set aside to mark the formation of the Organisation of African Unity in 1963 and the more recent founding of the African Union. Africa Day, on 25 May, is also held to celebrate the continent's different cultures.

Disappointed by the low attendance, organisers nonetheless said "the show must go on".

And the performers did not disappoint. Stone, a group from Dobsonville, Soweto, dazzled with their contemporary sounds.

They were followed by a kwaito duo from Meadowlands calling themselves The Black Cats. Dressed in brilliant white outfits, they did some impressive pantsula moves to the appreciation of the audience.

Some people who had been sitting on the fringes of the field edged closer to the stage when a group calling themselves Imbali, from Vosloorus in Ekurhuleni, took to the stage. Playing with an enthusiasm that set them apart, Imbali performed soulful ballads that moved people to sway to the beat.

"I think people really missed out by not coming to this show," said Alexandra resident Vuyile Mpofu. "This is one of the best music shows I have ever attended because the performers gave it all they had to prove they are up there with the best."
