Cold weather here to stay

This week's freezing weather is here to stay, at least until the weekend, says the South African Weather Service.

May 24, 2006

By Shamin Chibba

WINTER has introduced itself to Joburg the way it knows best – with ferociously chilly temperatures and cheek-numbingly cold winds.

And Evert Scholtz, a forecaster at the South African Weather Service, says the weather will remain frosty until the end of the week. "We are expecting improvement from Friday onwards."

Minimum temperatures are measured in the early morning. "The coldest time is just before sunrise or when the skies were clear the night before," he explains.

The cold weather has been brought on by the sub-polar air that swept across South Africa on Saturday. "It will become partly cloudy tomorrow but will still be cold."

But Joburgers are adapting to the weather, with Malcolm Midgley of the City's emergency management services saying that so far there have not been many cold-related incidents. "There has only been a couple of fires because of people trying to keep warm with electric and oil heaters."

To prevent such accidents, Midgley advises people to "to make sure that their heating devices [are] correctly connected, to make sure that oil is not leaking and that there are no badly made connections".

The forecast for Wednesday, 24 May, is a low of -1°C and a high of 14°C.
