ONE day a year is devoted to celebrating mothers. This Mother's Day, spoil your mom with a picnic at the Johannesburg Zoo, where 702 Talk Radio is hosting its annual Mother's Day concert.
This year Mother's Day falls on Sunday, 14 May. The concert – now on its fifteenth year – attracts families from all corners of the city who come to picnic on the lawns and enjoy the "popular" classics of the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra, conducted by the well-known Richard Cock.
Accompanied by the orchestra, soloists Craig Urbani, Veronique Lalouette and Given Mabena will perform everything from kid's classics, like songs from The Jungle Book to firm favourites such as tunes from Frank Sinatra, Abba and Josh Groban.
The annual Mothers' Day concert takes place at the Joburg Zoo
"With this being a true family event, we haven't forgotten about the kids. Apart from the selection of musical treats we have lined up for them, we've also organised a range of activities – from face-painting for the smaller tots to the supervised mechanical bull and Velcro Wall for older kids," station manager Pheladi Gwangwa explains.
"Not only will concert-goers get to treat their moms in style, they will also get the chance to meet their favourite 702 presenters."
The concert is a firm favourite with listeners, says Gwangwa. "We're happy to present this fun-filled family event once again with sponsor BP Express."
Senzo Ngcobo, the marketing co-ordinator at the zoo, adds: "We are excited, especially since the show is sponsored. Sponsored events at the zoo are always a success."
The programme kicks off at 12pm and ends at 3pm; however, the zoo opens at 9am. Tickets are R32 an adult, R19 each for children between three and 12 and for pensioners.
Visitors are asked to bring along unused clothes and blankets, and non-perishable foods that will be donated to the Salvation Army. All earnings from ticket sales will go towards the Johannesburg Zoological Gardens.
There is secure parking at the zoo and across the road at Zoo Lake. For more information contact the Johannesburg Zoo on 011 646 2000.
