Spain comes to Roodepoort

An evening of Spanish dance is planned for the Pro Musica Theatre in Roodepoort. Light on Dance features Brazilian-born Demi Fernandez on flamenco guitar.

March 8, 2006

By Emmanuel Mulaudzi

SPANISH dance is the order of the evening at the Pro Musica Theatre in Roodepoort, when a vibrant troupe of dancers perform a combination of Spanish dance to music by Georges Bizet and traditional Basque dance from the north of Spain.

Presented by the Fiesta Dance Company in association with Almiria Wilhelm, Meagan Harris, Sayward Harris, Shannon Johnstone and Robin Watts, the show, Light on Dance, runs from 5 to 8 April. Shows are at 8pm.

Spanish dance has influenced many other genres, which the show includes, such as traditional Mexican dance, rumbas from South America and czardas from Hungary. South African dancer Linda Vargas, of the Linda Vargas Spanish Dance Company, puts in a guest appearance.

The show's choreographer and director, Florence Fourie, has choreographed many productions over the years and her vision and creativity has helped to create a unique blend of dance disciplines and styles, according to Bellinda Edge, the theatre's manager of direct marketing.

Fourie has trained dancers of all ages in Spanish and other traditional dance styles.

The dancers will be accompanied by the head of the jazz and popular music department at the Durban Institute of Technology, guitarist Demi Fernandez.

Guitarist
Fernandez was born in Brazil of Spanish parents and spent many years performing different types of Spanish music, called flamenco tablaos in his parents' homeland.

He joined the Linda Vargas Spanish Dance Company in 1996 as the resident guitarist and has appeared as the leading flamenco guitarist with top Spanish dance companies in South Africa, and in performances like Guitars for Africa.

"There is much expertise and experience among this collection of talented young people," reads a statement from the theatre. "With dance examinations, festivals and many accolades behind them, they are wonderfully equipped for this diverse programme of dance."

Featured dancers include Nicole Haswell, who has performed at the Rodrigues Dance Theatre in Texas, in the United States, and for the Nuria Garcia Dance Company in London, England.
