The ANC has again won a majority of seats in Johannesburg, racking up 62 percent of the votes in the city in the local government elections.

THE African National Congress (ANC) has emerged as the out-right winner in the municipal elections held on 1 March, scooping 62 percent of the votes in the City of Johannesburg.

It won 136 of the 217 seats. The Democratic Alliance (DA) managed to grab 59 seats with 27 percent of the votes. A total of 862 333 Joburgers voted for the ANC with the DA garnering 374 456 votes.

The two parties were followed by the Inkatha Freedom Party, which won seven seats with 3 percent, or 46 597, of votes. It was closely followed by the Independent Democrats with four seats, or 2 percent of votes. A total of 26 369 voters cast their votes for the latter party.

In Joburg the municipal elections were contested by 17 political parties, vying for 109 ward seats and 108 proportional representational seats. The 108 proportional representation councillors, are elected in terms of a party list system.

The Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC) and the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) managed to win two seats each. However, the ACDP pipped the PAC by winning 13 519 votes to 10 890.

The Independent Party, the Azanian People's Organisation (Azapo), the Vryheidsfront Plus, the Christian Democratic Party, the United Democratic Movement, the Christian Front and the Operation Khanyisa Movement all managed to win one seat each.

Political parties that failed to win a seat in Johannesburg were the National Democratic Convention; the United Independent Front; the Sunrise Park, Protea City and Greenside Residents' Association; the Economic Freedom Movement; and the Black Consciousness Forum.

A total of 1 384 327 valid votes were recorded out of a possible total of 1 739 292 votes in Johannesburg.
