YOUNG people in Eldorado Park will be able to expand their horizons when Better Life, a non-governmental organisation, launches a youth advisory centre in the area.
The Better Life Youth Advisory Centre is a project of the Better Life Centre, a multi-purpose community development centre in Eldorado Park that offers much-needed services to that suburb, Soweto, Lenasia and the surrounding informal settlements.
Although it has been operating on a small scale since January, the youth centre will be launched in full by mid-March. It will be run by Better Life, and the core funder is the Umsobomvu Youth Fund. It will operate from the Better Life Centre premises.
It aims to offer career information to young people, as well as enhance employment opportunities for unemployed and unskilled people between the ages of 18 and 35. It will also give career guidance to grade 12 learners.
The University of Johannesburg has come on board and will demonstrate the career training it offers to young people. It will also give guidance on applying for bursaries.
According to Better Life manager Tessa Dooms, Damelin and Boston City Campus have agreed to offer career advice to school pupils.
The centre has three full-time employees and one volunteer. It is sponsored by private companies, although the Umsobomvu Youth Fund is the main sponsor. It also approaches companies such as Eskom, Telkom, South African Airways and South African Breweries to fund bursaries.
In addition to its youth services, Better Life offers HIV and Aids counselling, life skills courses and help with social issues that affect the community, like woman and child abuse. "We will also offer services such as foster care to children and the socially destitute," Dooms explains.
Motlalepula Thupudi, an Umsombvu Youth Fund programme officer, says the youth advisory centre will focus on education and access to information for youngsters.
It will offer career counselling and information on learnerships, and help learners write their curriculum vitae, she adds.
The centre will also hold community outreach campaigns to educate young people about Aids.
The centre is based at 19 Circle Road, Eldorado Park extension 5. For more information call Tessa Dooms on 011 342 2054.
