FIRST it was just summonses and warrants of arrest; now Joburg motorists can check online for any traffic fines issued to them.
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department's online service has been upgraded to include outstanding traffic fines alongside summonses and warrants of arrest.
The service, called Traffic Fines: Outstanding Summonses and Warrants, was launched on 11 October and can be reached from the City's e-services website.
"The system has been upgraded in order for information on outstanding ticket fines to immediately go into the system," explains Edna Mamonyane, the metro police's spokesperson.
Users are required to register first, although using the site is free.
After finding out whether they have any traffic fines online, motorists are advised to pay what they owe at the nearest metro police office to avoid being caught at one of the police's regular roadside checkpoints.
A username and a password are necessary to access the website, although to register initially only an identity number is required.
But not only tech-savy motorists are benefiting from the metro police's new systems – if a computer is not readily available, Joburgers can check for fines, summonses and warrants of arrest issued in their names using an SMS information service launched earlier this year.
That service is accessed through cellphone. Motorists simply have to send an SMS with their identity numbers to 36997, and an SMS will be returned, with details of their outstanding fines.
For a once-off check on your fines, the cost is R5 for an SMS. However, motorists can subscribe to the service and receive information about any new fines issues in their names for R5 a month. In that case, the SMSes cost R2 each.
