TO celebrate Mozart's 250th birthday this year, violinists Miroslav Chakaryan and Zanta Hofmeyr will perform some of the maestro's works on 2 April with the Pro Musica Orchestra. The conductor is Weiss Doubell.
This year has been declared the Year of Mozart, with celebrations and concerts planned throughout the year around the world, all in celebration of the composer's birthday. These activities include concerts, exhibitions and events dealing with Mozart's life and work.
The Pro Musica programme includes Adagio and Fugue KV 546 in C Minor, Concertone KV 190 in C Major for two violins and orchestra, Serenata Notturna KV 239 in D Major and Symphony No 38 KV 504 in D Major. The latter is also known as the Prague Symphony.
Chakaryan, who was born in Bulgaria, comes from a family of musicians. He began violin lessons when he was six and made his first public appearance at the age of nine, playing concertos by Vivaldi and Bach.
A graduate of the Sofia Music School and the National Conservatoire in Sofia, in Bulgaria, Chakaryan won several music prizes as a student. He has performed as a soloist since 1982, touring the world, before settling in South Africa in 1991.
Chakaryan is the concert master of both the Pro Musica Orchestra and the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra.
South African violinist Hofmeyr is a graduate from the famous Juilliard School in New York. She made her New York debut at the Carnegie Recital Hall as a winner of the Artist International Competition.
Hofmeyr, who studied with Dorothy Delay and Hyo Kang, returned to South Africa in 1985 and has since devoted her time to teaching and performing as a soloist and chamber musician.
She has regularly performed as a soloist with the Artscape and Johannesburg philharmonic orchestras, as well as with other symphony orchestras in South Africa. Hofmeyr is also a chamber musician and recitalist.
The concert is at the Pro Musica Theatre, Christiaan de Wet Road, Florida Park, at 3.30pm. Tickets are R40, R70 and R100, and are available at Computicket. A 25 percent discount is available on the R100 tickets for Friends of the Theatre, pensioners, learners, students and for block bookings of 10 or more.
