NEED your car washed? Johannesburg Water is hosting its third annual car wash day at Thokoza Park, in Soweto, on Sunday, 26 March.
The Soweto Car Wash Campaign is an annual drive to educate people to use water effectively. It forms part of National Water Week celebrations.
According to Jameel Chand, the senior manager of communications and marketing at Joburg water, the campaign aims to show "people that less water can be used to wash cars".
Chand says that it has been found that people waste between 200 and 300 litres of water when they use hosepipes to wash their cars. The annual car wash event is held to demonstrate, "that 10 litres of water can be used".
Last year more than 600 cars were washed using less than 6 000 litres of water; this year's challenge is to wash about 1 000 cars.
"The campaign is also part of Johannesburg Water's broader public programme aimed at informing and educating residents of the city about the importance of water management and conservation issues," Chand says.
It serves as a reminder for people that water management needs to be sustained in Johannesburg, even though the rains are still good and major dams are nearing capacity levels.
At the car wash, while cars and other motor vehicles are being washed, Y-fm's popular DJs will keep the crowds entertained. It opens at 10am and cars will be washed into the afternoon.
