LOCAL government managers from around the world will descend on Joburg from 24 to 30 March, when the city will host delegates from the International City/County Management Association (ICMA).
The ICMA is an organisation of local government managers from cities, towns, counties and regional entities across the world. The Institute for Local Government Management of South Africa (ILGM), an organisation that aims to enhance managerial expertise in local government in order to attain excellence in the sector, is facilitating the week-long meeting.
"The meeting will provide a platform for the delegates to share knowledge and exchange ideas about issues in local government," says Nthatisi Modingoane, the City's spokesperson.
Delegates will meet at Region 3's Sandton offices, with the formal welcome being held at the Metro Centre in Braamfontein.
Among other things, it will also serve as a platform for the City of Johannesburg to market itself to leading and influential officials as a world-class African city, who, hopefully, will promote Joburg as an ideal tourist destination.
Delegates will have a chance to visit inner city projects and will also be taken on a tour of Soweto, including the Nelson Mandela Museum and the Hector Pieterson Memorial.
Established in 1914, the ICMA provides technical and managerial assistance, training and information resources to its members and the local government community. The organisation boasts an 8 000-strong membership of managers from small towns, with populations of a few hundred, to metropolitan areas serving several million people.
According to the organisation's website, it is well known for introducing sound management practices to local governments, municipal associations, non-governmental organisations and agencies in developing countries and emerging democracies throughout the world.
The institute is also committed to peer exchanges and partnerships that encourage sharing and replication of leading practices in the local government sector. Since 1989 it has facilitated more than 100 partnerships between leading practitioners from American local governments and local government associations and their counterparts in developing and transitional countries.
